CARMICHAEL, Heather, Dr (1923-2009)

 Person

Assembly memorial minute 2009

Heather Carmichael was for many years a missionary with the Presbyterian Church of Victoria, supported by many congregations throughout the state. Her heart was faithfully for the Lord and his kingdom and she was a tireless and diligent worker.

Heather was a woman of rare gifts. Born into a farming family in northern Victoria, Heather learnt practical skills which she brought into her subsequent adventures in Pakistan. She was as adept at sewing as she was at servicing a 4-wheel drive vehicle. She trained in medicine at the University of Melbourne and worked as a medical missionary in Pakistan with Interserve for 18 years, setting up rural health programs, training Pakistani language teachers and advising the new Christian Hospital Association of Pakistan.

After returning to Australia due to ill health, Heather served on TEAR’s National Allocations Committee for over ten years. Heather’s was a life lived for God’s honour and a life lived generously and openly to others.

Dr Heather Carmichael passed away on 27 February 2009 after a long illness.
