INNES, David J, Rev (1934-2007)

 Person

Assembly memorial minute, 2008

Rev David James Innes was born on 26th October 1934 in Edinburgh, Scotland. The grandson of missionaries in Nyasaland, David gave his heart and life to the Lord Jesus Christ in his youth.

As a young man he served with Scripture Union on beach mission where he met his life partner Anne. After realisation that the Lord had called him to serve in the ministry he studied theology at Edinburgh University, after which he served as Church of Scotland minister in a small coastal village in Scotland and then in the large parish of Kirkwall on the distant and windy Orkney Islands.

This General Assembly is so grateful that in 1982 the Innes family made perhaps the hardest decision of their life - to accept the call to St Stephen’s Surrey Hills. They conducted a faithful and fruitful ministry at St Stephens for 17 years where the Lord used David’s personal example of piety, his clear and passionate preaching and his spiritual wisdom to effect change in many people’s lives.

David Innes served the wider Presbyterian Church in many, many capacities and was also Moderator of this General Assembly (1990). He and Anne cheerfully and wisely served the Lord in many different missionary agencies such as Interserve and Trans World Radio. David Innes died on 2nd December 2007. We will miss his loving, gentle and patient witness, his faithful preaching of the Word, and his wisdom offered in humility to this General Assembly over many years.
