GOBLE, Theodore Charles Leslie, Rev, M.A. B.D. (1888-1948)

 Person

Assembly memorial minute, 1949

The Rev. Theodore Charles Leslie Goble was born in Carlton in 1888. As a young man he was employed in the Metropolitan Gas Company. He entered the Home Mission service at the age of 26 and was at Yendon; Mansfield, as assistant to its minister; then at Port Campbell, Kinglake, Torquay, and at Warburton. His years in the Hall were 1918 to 1920. As an exit student he was appointed to Violet Town, being ordained and inducted there on the 9th February, 1921.

Eight months after resigning Violet Town, he was inducted into Warragul, on the 25th August, 1924. Four years later he was translated to his final charge, Springvale, when he laboured most successfully for 19 years, until ill-health necessitated resignation on the 30th June, 1947. He continued to the last to prepare for the declaration of the Gospel, always cherishing the hope that he would return to active service.

He was of modest tendencies, but very sincere and sympathetic, winning the confidence of Church and non-Church folk alike. He was a member of the Sustentation and Stipends Committees. He gave much help to the Lay Preachers’ Association, where he was highly appreciated. His keenest interest was in Temperance reform, being an ardent worker on the Assembly’s committee, as well as being a member of the Local Option Alliance. Members of the Ministers’ Club will remember his interest therein.

He was a life member of the Springvale Cricket Club, for which he had served many years as official scorer. He was highly respected by the Football and Cricket Clubs. From the time of the inception of the National Fitness Committee at Springvale he was a member. Mr. Goble was a faithful pastor, a thoughtful preacher, and loved the House of God, continuing to attend regularly divine worship, morning and evening, during the last ten months at Essendon. He was not permitted to enjoy the fifteen months of retirement because of serious cardiac trouble. He passed away, suddenly, at his home in Essendon, on the 25th September, 1948. To Mrs. Goble, his son and daughter, the Assembly tenders sincere sympathy.
