ELLIOTT, George Henry, Rev , M.A. B.D. (1878-1948)
Assembly memorial minute, 1949
George Elliott was born on the 12th April, 1878, at Natte Yallock, near Avoca, and became a farmer in his native district. At the age of 27 he responded to a call to the ministry and entered Queen’s College at his own expense, where he received initial training. He was accepted as a Home Missionary and appointed to Casterton in 1908, and to Kingston (S.A.) in 1909. He married in 1911 and the following year went as Home Missionary to Wonthaggi, then a “canvas town. ” This was his first year in the Hall, from which he passed as an exit student in 1913.
Under Home Mission appointment he went to Burnie (Tas. ), and was ordained and inducted there on the 25th June, 1914. After three years he returned to Victoria to settle at Macarthur on the 6th December, 1917. He was translated to Carngham in 1925, and to Clunes seven years later. He served within the Ballarat Presbytery for 23 years, in many capacities. A ministry of 40 years was spent among farming communities, with that special insight of one himself called from the plough, thus sharing the problems and the joys of his parishioners.
He lived a practical Christianity, being open-hearted, open-minded and open-handed. His ministry was given especially to the young, who gave God, a minister devoted to his divine calling.
His stay at Clunes was marked by ill-health. He appeared to have recovered from an operation, but died in hospital on 2nd October, 1948.
To Mrs.Elliott and her family the Assembly tenders sincere sympathy.
