PHILLIPS, George Daniel, Rev (1866-1948)

 Person

Assembly memorial minute, 1948

G. D. Phillips was born at Hotham (North Melbourne) on the 1st September, 1866. For many years he followed the life of a mechanical engineer, until at the age of 44 he offered for service in Home Mission work. His first appointment (1910) was to Gormandale, where he manifested gifts as a worker for Christ by great tact and discernment in dealing with people of all types. Throughout the several Home Mission appointments, he had decided advantages because of his long years as an engineer. At Gormandale, he was greatly helped and prepared by his Moderator, the Rev. W. Huey Steele, then at Traralgon. Thus, during his studies in Ormond, where he entered in 1916, he passed with credit, completing exit in 1918, when 52 years of age.

He fulfilled a brief appointment at Ouyen, to be transferred to Dunolly, where he was ordained and inducted on the 21st of January, 1919. On the 4th March, 1920, he was translated to Lang Lang; to Whittlesea on the 21st May, 1925, and to Chiltern on the 22nd February, 1929. After six years there, he resigned and continued as a supply preacher throughout the Church, until the end came on the 15th April, 1948. Mr. Phillips was sincere and wise in his ministry, not seeking the popularity of men but that peace of heart resulting from constant obedience to Christ his Lord.

For two years he had lived a widower. To his son and daughter (Mrs. Hayes) the Assembly tenders sincere sympathy.
