GEDDES, Alexander Clarke, Rev (1886-1950)

 Person

Assembly memorial minute, 1950

Alexander Geddes was born of Scottish parentage at Ballarat on 12th August, 1886. Since there was no Presbyterian Church nearby, the family worshipped with the Methodist communion. Mr. Geddes adopted the trades of engineering and electrical engineering. In 1914 he entered the home mission service of the Methodist Church, and for one session attended Queen’s College. Some time later he completed the four-years course, during which he laboured at Wentworth, Glenferrie, Maffra and Sea Lake. In 1919 he was ordained in Wesley Church, Melbourne, and appointed to Wickliffe. Thereafter he was at Raywood and Dunkeld, in which latter charge he resigned from the Methodist ministry.

The Presbytery of Hamilton recommended his petition to the General Assembly of Australia. The prayer of the petition was granted with the provision that Mr. Geddes fulfil two years’ training at the Theological Hall. He completed exit in 1929 and was inducted into the Corryong charge on 3rd January, 1930. He was translated to Wickliffe in 1934, and to East Brunswick in 1941. Here his health broke down and necessitated his resignation in 1945.

His health continued to weaken during the five years of retirement, but this ordeal was born with a Christian fortitude that inspired those who knew him. A quiet and gracious manner earned the respect and admiration of all. He was known as a servant of God whose faith was steadfastly grounded in the abiding presence of his God. He was a faithful and beloved pastor, a thoughtful preacher, and a devoted husband and father.

He passed away in St. Andrew’s Hospital on 14th March, 1950.

To Mrs. Geddes and her three sons the Assembly tenders sincere sympathy.
