MacDOUGALL, D. A., Rev, M.A. (1856-1938)
Assembly memorial minute, 1938
The Rev. Daniel Allan MacDougall, who died on October 16th, 1938, was born on April 9th, 1856, at Loch Goilhead, Argyllshire, where his father, the late Rev. John MacDougall, M. A., D. D., was the Parish Minister. The son was educated at Glasgow High School and Glasgow University. He came to Australia at the age of twenty, and for a time was on the land in Goulburn Valley. He completed his course for the ministry at the University of Melbourne and Ormond Theological Hall, being one of the foundation members of that Hall. On the completion of his course he was appointed assistant at Buninyong.
He had successful ministries at St. George’s, Geelong (his first charge), Hagley, Kirklands and Epping (Tasmania), Malvern (the immediate predecessor of the late Rev. D. Macrae Stewart), Mornington and Mirboo North. In 1931 Mr. MacDougall was appointed chaplain to the Austin Hospital, the Mental Hospital at Mont Park, and other Government Institutions in the district. He exercised a very gracious ministry among the afflicted, and was beloved by many. Since 1934 he has been an actively interested member of the Session at Scots Church, Heidelberg. In a family, a number of whom have been very active in our Church’s life, are included the Rev. J. P. MacDougall of Beaufort, Mr. Walter MacDougall of Kunmunya, and Mrs. T. Riddle of the Manse, Ringwood.
Mr. MacDougall was a man of distinctive personality and gracious charm of manner. He was a wide reader, and possessed a most cultured mind. He was able to elicit the religious difficulties that troubled men’s minds, and to deal most sympathetically with them, always having in view the winning of men to personal allegiance to Christ. He threw all his powers into his work as chaplain, the urgency of which ever weighed upon him.
The sympathy of the Assembly is extended to the bereaved family.
