BAIRD, Ernest McNicol, Rev, B.A. (1879-1952)
Assembly memorial minute, 1953
Ernest Baird was born at St. Andrew’s Manse, Geelong, on the 24th December, 1879. He attended Geelong College, and later was educated at the Melbourne University. He was an excellent tennis player, representing his colleges - both Geelong and Ormond Colleges - in the first teams. From the University he entered the Theological Hall in 1908, and completed his exit year in 1910.
The following year he accepted an exit appointment by the Home Mission Committee to Cressy, where he was ordained and inducted in 1911. In October of 1914 he was translated to Terang; in 1928 to Warrackneal; in 1935 to Mooroopna; in 1939 to North Essendon; to Drouin in 1943, his final charge, which he resigned on 31st January, 1947. For five years he lived in retirement, giving himself graciously throughout the State in pulpit supply.
Mr. Baird was loyal to the Church and her courts, although seldom heard in debate in the Assembly. He was diligent in the preparation of his sermons and a very thoughtful preacher. His sincerity and thoughtfulness for others made him a devoted pastor among parishioners of the various charges to which he was called. As a son of the Manse he possessed a true conception of Presbyterianism, that characterised his Church work.
Mr. Baird was a Christian gentleman, consecrated to the Master whose call to the ministry was always vivid in his witness. He was refined and cultured, quiet of manner and gentle in his ways, leaving fragrant memories and gracious influences in the minds of his brethren.
In 1951 he was declared a minister emeritus with a seat in the Presbytery of Geelong.
He passed away on Thursday, 20th March, 1952.
To Mrs. Baird and her family, the Assembly tenders sincere sympathy.
