Assembly memorial minute, 1954

Gwynne Jones was bom at Hoylake, in Cheshire, England, on 24th October, 1882. He came to Australia at the age of ten. He graduated at the Melbourne University, Master of Arts in 1902, with first class honours in Logic and Philosophy. His Theological Course was interrupted as a result of the death of his father, the Rev. Henry Jones, M.A.. He spent some years in teaching and was Junior Classical Master in Geelong College, and later, the Headmaster of the University High School in Melbourne. He finally completed his Theological course in 1911 and was awarded the Stewart Travelling Scholarship.

In 1912 he was appointed to Elmore for his year of Home Mission Service. In 1913 he took up his Scholarship and went to Scotland, where he did an extra year of Theology under Professor James Denney, and was subsequently appointed for some months to minister to a Presbyterian Church in Helensburgh. He studied also in Germany and travelled in the Holy Land.

In March, 1914, Mr. Jones returned to Australia and was called to Cororooke, where he was ordained and inducted, on June 9th of the same year. In 1918 he resigned this charge and returned to England and was married to Miss Macmillan of Glasgow. He was called to the London Congregation of St. Andrews, Goodmayes, where he remained until 1923 when he again returned to Australia.

He was settled at Portarlington that same year and was translated to St. Leonards, Brighton Beach, in 1926, from which charge he resigned in 1938. For 15 years he lived in retirement, and was engaged in supply preaching.

Mr. Jones was a faithful Presbyter and gave of his ability and scholarship to the welfare of his Church. Until almost the last he was a most valued member of the Beneficiary Fund Committee. His cheerful manner enabled him to make friendships readily. He was an able preacher and gave gladly of his gifts unto the evangel of Christ his Lord.

He died at his home on Wednesday, 7th January, 1953.

To his daughters the Assembly tenders sincere sympathy.
