HIGGINBOTHAM, Samuel John, Rev, M.A., Prof (1893-1953)

 Person

Assembly memorial minute, 1954

Mr. Higginbotham was born in Old Whittington, England, in 1893. Coming to Australia in 1913, he served the Home Mission Committee for several years, and entered the Theological Hall, Ormond College, in 1924, to complete Exit in 1926. He accepted an Exit appointment to the Newstead and Maldon charge, wherein he was ordained and inducted on 1st April, 1927. He was translated to Cressy in 1929, and to St. Cuthbert’s, Ballarat, in 1937. During this pastorate he was Chaplain of the Ballarat College. On 16th June, 1949, he was inducted to the pastoral charge of Terang.

Mr. Higginbotham was a faithful preacher of the Gospel, whose pulpit ministrations clearly manifested conscientious study and thorough preparation. He gave of his best in the services of his parishioners and the courts of the Church. A devoted pastor, he was in constant touch with the experiences of his people, most especially in sickness and bereavement. He accepted more than his full share of Presbytery work, and executed the duties with common sense and fidelity. He laid stress upon the work among youth, and made a decided appeal to men.

He died suddenly in his manse at Terang on the evening of Wednesday, 12th August, 1953.

To Mrs. Higginbotham, her two daughters and son, the Assembly tenders sincere sympathy.
