HARRISON, George Edward, Rev , F.R.A.S., Prof (1870-1954)

 Person

Assembly memorial minute, 1955

Mr. G.E. Harrison was born at Camperdown, Victoria, on 3rd August, 1870. In early years he was engaged in farming. In 1905 he entered the Home Mission service and laboured in Victoria. In 1907 he entered the Theological Hall, Ormond College, and on completing his Exit year, was ordained at Petersburg, South Australia, by the Presbytery of Belalie in 1910.

He was translated to Orbost, Victoria, in 1912; to Queenstown, Tasmania, in 1917; to Evandale, Tasmania, in 1921; to Oatlands, Tasmania, in November, 1924; to Smeaton, Victoria, in February 1933; and to Mirboo North, Victoria, in April 1942.

This charge he resigned in March, 1949, and was declared minister emeritus, within the Presbytery of Tasmania, in October, 1951. The Church in Tasmania owes much to his faithful ministry, which will be long remembered in Queenstown, Evandale, and Oat lands. Mr. Harrison was a keen astronomer and, many years ago, secured a Fellowship of the Royal Astronomical Society.

Soon after retiring from the active service of the parish ministry, he was asked to accept the responsibilities of Kirklands-Campbelltown in the interregnum between the resignation of the Rev. P. Somerville and the induction of the Rev. A. Christie Johnstone.

Mr. Harrison was reticent and retiring, and spoke rarely on the floor of the House. He passed away in the Campbelltown Hospital on Saturday, 27th March, 1954, at the age of 83, having served through 44 years of ordained ministry.

To Mrs. Harrison, and to his three sons and daughter, the Assembly tender their sincere sympathy.
