ANDERSON, William Davenport, Rev (1884-1955)

 Person

Assembly memorial minute;

Born at Purnim, Victoria, on 16th October, 1884. Ordained and inducted to Bothwell, Tasmania, in 1912. Parishes: Bothwell, Tasmania, from 1912 to 1913; Bright, Victoria, from 1913 to 1916; Allansford, from 1916 to 1922; Werribee, from 1922 to 1926; Traralgon, from 1926 to 1929; Regent, 1929; resigned in 1939. Tallangatta, from 1941 to 1947; Portarlington, 1947; resigned in 1951. Died on Monday, 5th September, 1955.

Mr. Anderson helped his father on their farm until the age of 21 but, early in life, heard the call to the holy ministry and commenced study at the Theological Hall, Ormond College, in 1909. As an Exit Student in 1911, he entered the Home Mission service of our Church and was ordained and inducted to Bothwell, Tasmania.

After serving in several parishes, he resigned the pastorate of Regent in 1939 on account of indifferent health. After two years of recuperation, he accepted a call to Tallangatta.

In 1947 Mr. Anderson went to Portarlington from which charge he resigned in 1951, but he remained there, living in his own house, and continuing with the work of the Sunday School until he became ill.

Throughout a long ministry he was ever mindful of his high calling. His preaching was marked with sincerity and sure faith. Of quiet and unassuming manner, he did not seek public debate, though he was a faithful presbyter and enjoyed the fellowship of his brethren.

To Mrs. Anderson and her family, and also to Sister J. Anderson, his sister, the Assembly tender sincere sympathy.
