VERTIGAN, Earle, Rev (1900-1958)

 Person

Assembly memorial minute, 1959

A minister who served his God nobly both in his parish ministry and in his patient endurance of suffering during a long illness, the Rev. Earle Vertigan will not easily be forgotten in his parishes of Belmont and Glenhuntly.

Born in Tasmania on 23rd July, 1900, he served the Home Mission Committee in Stanley, Tasmania, and at Drouin and Yarra Glen in Victoria. After completing his course in the Theological Hall, he was ordained and inducted at Belmont in December, 1938. A call to St. David’s Church, Glenhuntly, came in August, 1942, and there Mr. Vertigan remained as minister till ill health compelled his retirement just a few months prior to his call Home on 18th October, 1958.

In a notable ministry of sixteen years, Mr. Vertigan led many to Christ, becoming beloved by a great number of those to whom he brought a new strength in times of need. Many were gathered into the Church who will be its strength in the Session, Board of Management, and in other Church organisations for many years to come.

Mr. Vertigan delighted in pastoral work, as well as in preaching, for he was essentially a parish minister. While he was not prominent in Assembly committees, he was a faithful servant of Jesus Christ in all that he undertook; and while in hospital he showed a great example of Christian fortitude, as more than one of our hospital chaplains has testified.

The Assembly assures Mrs. Vertigan and her two sons of its deep sympathy in their loss.
