HOGBEN, Ernest William, Rev (1880-1959)

 Person

Assembly memorial minute, 1959

A minister with the unusual distinction of having served in four states passed away on April 29th, 1959. The Rev. Ernest William Hogben was born at Redfern, N.S.W., on July 2nd, 1880, and was ordained at Canterbury, in that state, on November 2nd, 1909.

After serving at Dulwich Hill, N.S.W., he was persuaded to undertake work in the state of Western Australia, where his ministries were at Cottesloe (1923 to 1930) and Claremont (1930 to 1936). He was Moderator and also Clerk of the Western Australian Assembly, and took a leading part in all the activities of the Church in the Western State.

In 1936 he removed to Unley, a suburb of Adelaide, and came to Victoria as minister of Scots’ Church, Geelong West, in 1941. His pastorate there continued until he resigned in 1955 when he retired and settled at Torquay till his death.

Always an interesting and able preacher, he had a very real gift of friendship, and it may be truly said of him that he was "a man greatly beloved" by his colleagues in Presbytery and Assembly, as well as by the people of his congregations.

The Assembly extends its sympathy to his widow; two sons, Ernest (Adelaide) and Hewlett (Perth); and daughter, Mrs. Alan Paynter, of Ivanhoe.
