MARCHANT, Arthur Dudey Bathgate, Rev, B.A. B.D. (1889-1959)
Assembly memorial minute, 1959
The Rev. Arthur Dudley Bathgate Marchant, B.A., B.D., was born on January 27th, 1889, and was educated in New South Wales, graduating in Arts in 1909. He then Joined the teaching profession, and it was not till 1919, having heard the call to the ministry, he entered St. Andrew’s Theological Hall, Sydney.
His first charge was Coonabarabran, where he was ordained in January, 1922. He held three other charges in N.S.W. - Glebe, Lindfield and Turramurra. From the latter he resigned in 1941 to become Staff Chaplain, R.A.A.F. After six years in that position he became the senior Director of Home Missions in N.S.W. and, after the death of the Rev. I. Howie, he came to Malvern where he exercised a notable ministry till his sudden death on 24th May, 1959.
He had been Moderator of the New South Wales Assembly, and on coming to Victoria continued his work in the Federal Assembly as convener of the Board of Christian Education and as a member of the Joint Board of Graded Lessons of Australia and New Zealand.
A humble and unassuming man, he had a graciousness of manner that gave a special quality to all his work. To fine intellectual ability he added a remarkable sensitiveness of soul. His pastorate in Malvern won the deep affection of his people, both men and women , and his sermons had the background always of the amazing goodness of God in Christ. His work with the R.A.A.F. was very effective and won admiration in many quarters where one would least expect it.
The Assembly thanks God for the gift of our brother in Christ, Adam Marchant, and expresses its deep sympathy with his widow and family.
