TAYLOR, George Stewart, Rev, B.A. B.D. (1901-1959)

 Person

Assembly memorial minute, 1960

The Rev. George Stewart Taylor came from his beloved Scotland to Australia with the love of God and His Church deep in his heart.

Though a skilled and clever technician, he heard the call to the ministry, and faced the sacrifices involved with a determined will and unfaltering faith, graduating B.A., B.D. He served at Hopetoun-Beulah, and also as a chaplain in the Second World War, and his only other charge was St. Andrew’s, Oakleigh, where he ministered for seventeen years until his death on 16th September, 1959.

He was a sympathetic preacher and a tender and understanding pastor. He served well in the Courts of the Church, notably as Clerk of the Presbytery of Melbourne East and convener of the Gaols and Hospitals Committee. Always he was a workman for God who needed not to be ashamed, and alert to answer the bugles of great convictions sounding in his soul. His eager desire to serve his congregation and his Presbytery outran his strength; in spite of his physical disability he disregarded friendly counsels of caution and probably hastened his death; but the Oakleigh congregation and the wider Church will ever cherish the memory of so costly a devotion.

A fellow-Presbyter has said of him - "Our colleague had a great and ample life, for life is the one possession which grows by reckless extravagance of bestowal rather than by cautious economy. The Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord."

To Mrs. Taylor, his son Gordon and his daughter Jean the Assembly expresses its prayerful sympathy.
