HILL, Samuel James, Rev (1883-1960)

 Person

Assembly memorial minute, 1960

Born in October, 1883, the Rev. Samuel James Hill entered the Holy Ministry somewhat later in life than the average man; nevertheless he served the Church for thirty-four years after his ordination. His Home Mission course lasted from 1920 to 1923, and he entered the Ormond College Theological Hall in 1924. At the conclusion of his college course the Home Mission Committee appointed him to Yackandandah, and a call to become the minister of that charge resulted in his ordination and induction on 12th December, 1926.

He accepted a call to Seymour in 1929, and thereafter to Ararat in 1935, Creswick in 1942, and Darlington-Derrinallum in 1951. His final charge was Murtoa which, like Seymour, was an important railway centre. His death occurred on 4th March, 1960, after four years’ ministry there.

Small in stature, he was none the less great in earnest activity in the cause of his Master and Lord. Apart from his congregational duties he was keenly interested in the work of the various presbyteries of which at different times he was a member, and he gave of his time and talents faithfully in the service of the Assembly.

He leaves a widow and one son to whom the Assembly extend their sincere sympathy.
