CHAPMAN, William, Rev (1881-1960)
Assembly memorial minute, 1960
The passing of the Rev. William Chapman on May 27th, 1960, removed from our midst one who was a good student, a faithful minister of the Word and pastor to his people.
Born at Dromana, he entered the Home Mission course and eventually went through Ormond College Theological Hall with distinction. His facility in Hebrew was such that he was lovingly called "Gesenius” by his fellow students - after the well-known Hebrew dictionary.
His ordination took place at Neerim South on July 14th, 1908. He served successively at Cavendish (1909), Yarra Glen (1916), Framlingham (1920) and Allansford (1923). On account of ill-health he resigned from Allansford in 1936 after an active ministry, and lived a retired life for 24 years until his death at Balwyn, maintaining to the end an intense interest in Church and world affairs. Though handicapped by ill-health, he was known as a loyal pastor who served his parishioners well.
He is survived by his wife, one son (Mr. Wilbur Chapman) and one daughter (Mrs. Anne Ridgers) both of Melbourne, to whom the Assembly tenders sincere sympathy.
