 Person

Assembly memorial minute 1961

Samuel Martin was taken to his rest on Friday, May 26th, 1961. He was born in Dublin, Eire, 1870. Acknowledging God’s call to the Christian Ministry he trained at Trinity College, University of Dublin, and Theological Hall, Belfast, and holding the degree of Master of Arts, was ordained at Wexford City in 1901. Before, this, he spent some time as Colporteur Missionary to Roman Catholics in Ireland, and later as Travelling Secretary in various towns of Northern Ireland.

He came to Australia in 1905 and served in the Presbyterian Church of Queensland as parish minister at St. John’s Annerley and Sherwood. Mr. Martin was appointed Clerk of the Assembly in 1918 which position he held until 1927 except for the year 1921 when he was Moderator of the General Assembly. During this time he was for 12 years a Lecturer at Emmanuel College, Brisbane.

Following a period of service in the Presbyterian Church of Victoria he came to Norwood in the year 1928 at a time when the Church in South Australia was in need of the strong guidance which his experience and vision enabled him to give. He was subsequently inducted into the charge of St. Peter’s and later, Lobethal. The General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of South Australia elected him as its Moderator on two occasions,1931 and 1941, and appointed him as Clerk, which position he held for 18 years, during the period 1935- 1953.

Mr. Martin completed his parish ministry when he retired from the charge of Lobethal in 1945. This work he continued until 2 days before his death at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Hospital, Adelaide.

The Rev. Samuel Martin, M.A., will be remembered for the warmth of his friendship and the quality of Christian joy which was apparent to all who knew him. Very few men are privileged to serve His God during such a long, active ministry, and with such distinction in the Courts of the Church.
