CROCKETT, John Alexander, Rev (1865-1961)
Assembly memorial minute 1961
The oldest minister of the Victorian Church at the time of his death, the Rev. John Alexander Crockett passed away on June 15th, 1961. Born at Mansfield ninety-six years ago, Mr. Crockett trained at the Ormond College Theological Hall and was ordained and inducted at Mia Mia on 12th December, 1889. He ministered there until he translated to Learmonth in November 1900 and to Brunswick in 1904.
His long ministry at St. John’s, Elsternwick began in 1919. He resigned from this parish in 1933 to become Superintendent of the Group Mission at Collingwood and Fitzroy. He was convener of many Assembly committees and occupied the Moderator’s chair in 1924.
Tall and dignified in manner, he was a good preacher and a methodical organiser. He gave his time and strength freely in many good causes and will long be held in memory by the people of his former parishes as well as by a wider circle of friends.
Mrs. Crockett predeceased him. Latterly he lived with his daughter, Mrs. M.S. Mathew, of Brighton Beach. He also left two sons, Forrest and William.
The Assembly shares with his family in their thanksgiving for a long and faithful life and ministry and commends them all to the Grace of God.
