BROUGHTON, David Seymour, Rev (1913-1961)

 Person

Assembly memorial minute 1961

The Rev. David Seymour Broughton was bom in Coleraine, Victoria, on 4th February, 1913, hut lived during the formative years of his life at Brighton Beach, where he came under the influence of the late Rev. Hugh Kelly, minister of St. Leonard’s, which led him to his decision to prepare for the Holy Ministry.

He was educated at Ormond College and graduated Bachelor of Arts in 1936, and at the conclusion of his Theological Hall studies was appointed assistant to the minister of Scots Church. Thereafter he served as an Ordinary Seaman in the Navy, returning to Australia in 1942, when he was ordained and inducted as the minister of Pascoe Vale Charge.

In 1943 he began service as Chaplain to the Royal Australian Navy, where his influence was effective and enduring.

He served the Church in the Parishes of Hartwell, Sale and Ormond, being inducted into his last parish on 9th August, 1961, just over six weeks prior to his death on 25th September, 1961.

Mr. Broughton was a man of many gifts - a faithful and acceptable preacher, a lover of reformed liturgy and church order. He served the Church on several committees and none more than the Code Committee. His contribution to the Church through this committee is perpetuated in the revised code to which, in the earlier stages of revision, he gave valuable service.

He was a man with gracious spirit and whimsical humour that endeared him to his wide circle of friends.

He leaves a widow, a son and daughter, to whom the Assembly extend their sympathy, and commend to the Grace of God that is all sufficient.
