JONES, David Samuel, Rev (1879-1962)

 Person

Assembly memorial minute 1962

The Rev. David Samuel Jones, who died on October 2nd, 1962, was of Welsh descent, and was bom at Snake Valley, in the Ballarat district, on July 31st, 1879. While engaged in rural activities in the Ballarat district, he officiated as a lay preacher in various surrounding parishes with much acceptance, and eventually decided to serve the Church as a Home Missionary. Entering the Theological Hall at Ormond College, he completed his course in 1909, and was ordained to the ministry at Campbellfield on March 3rd, 1910.

During the course of a long and active ministry, he occupied parishes in Tasmania and Queensland as well as in Victoria. His various charges were Devonport (Tasmania) in 1912, Portarlington in 1916, The Leigh in 1918, Kyneton in 1922, Heidelberg in 1925, Toowoomba (Queensland) in 1934, St. Giles, Geelong, in 1939 and Chalmers’ Church, Launceston, Tasmania in 1948.

Resigning from Chalmers' in 1952, he took up his residence in Geelong, where during his retirement his long experience enabled him to contribute greatly to the development of the Manifold Heights Home Mission Station into a full charge. He suffered a heart attack in the middle of 1962, and died in his sleep while a patient in hospital.

David Jones was a minister of high Christian standards, a faithful preacher and pastor, and his helpful disposition made his fellowship greatly valued by his brethren in the Assembly, as well as in the various Presbyteries of which he was at different times a member.

He is survived by his widow, by two sons, the Rev. D.M. Jones of Kew and the Rev. A. Sutherland Jones of Yarrawonga and by a daughter, Marion, a High School Teacher in Geelong. To these the Assembly expresses their deep sympathy and prays that God may comfort and sustain them.
