HARLAND, Coledge, Rev (1884-1963)
Assembly memorial minute 1963
One of a large family of ten children, the Rev. Coledge Harland was born at Fitzroy on October 29th, 1884, and educated at Scotch College. Entering the teaching profession, he was for some time on the staff of the Camberwell Grammar School. Then came the call to the Holy Ministry, to which he responded. He entered the University of Melbourne and the Ormond College Theological Hall, and was ordained and inducted to the charge of Kergunyah on January 21st, 1916.
Then came the urge to serve the Church in the great Inland of the continent. He was appointed by the A.I.M. as a Patrol Padre with headquarters at Oodnadatta in 1919, and had the distinction of being one of the few camel patrol men. By this primitive and arduous means of transport he penetrated into the lonliest parts of the land beyond the furthest fences, and to this day there are some who gratefully recall his friendly visits, and brotherly encouragement.
It was at Oodnadatta he met Sister Jane Williamson who was in charge of the hospital and who ultimately became his wife. Thus began a close and inspiring partnership. To them were born two sons, David and Ian.
On his return from the Inland, Coledge Harland accepted a call to Cranbourne, where he was inducted on August 21st, 1922, and from thence to Leongatha, where he was minister from 1924 to 1934. His longest pastorate was at Heidelberg. His active ministry concluded with a three year term at Creswick, after which he entered on a life of retirement, residing at East Malvern, He departed this life peacefully on May 3lst, 1963.
Coledge Harland exercised a dignified, earnest and friendly ministry in every sphere in which he served, and was influential in winning many candidates for the ministry. In the wider work of the Church he gave excellent service while Clerk of the Presbytery of Flinders, and on the Board of the A.I.M., while he was a valued convener of the Rolland House Committee.
The Assembly give thanks to Cod for this long and faithful ministry, and commend his widow and his sons to the Grace of Cod.
