 Person

Assembly memorial minute 1963

The Rev. Frederick James Thomas was killed in a tragic accident at Tecoma on July 4th, 1963, when he was struck by a car while on his way To the Church. He had attained the age of 79 years.

Born at Thomastown, Fred Thomas engaged in business pursuits for some time after leaving school, and was an excellent cricketer. He decided to enter the ministry, and after Home Mission service he entered the Theological Hall at Ormond College. As an exit student he volunteered for service in Korea as missionary of the Fellowship Union, and was ordained in the Scots Church, Collins Street, Melbourne. He sailed for Korea in January, 1916.

When he arrived in Korea, he and his wife were appointed to Kuchang, and served there until June, 1922, when he returned to Australia. He was inducted into the charge of Kergunyah in October, 1922. His other charges were - Devonport (Tasmania) in March, 1925; Skipton, January, 1933; Tecoma, December, 1940; Queenscliff, July 1949 and Wallan, April, 1952.

He resigned from Wallan in May, 1957, and lived in retirement at Tecoma. He was a devoted minister of notable sincerity and quiet faith, and was a man greatly loved both in Korea and in Australia.

His widow, two sons and two daughters survive him, and to them the Assembly extend their sympathy, praying that the comfort of Christ, the Risen Saviour, will bring to them the peace which passes human understanding.
