CHALINOR, John Percy, Rev (1889-1964)
Assembly memorial minute 1964
The Rev. John Percy Chalinor, who died in St. Andrew’s Hospital on September 4th, 1964, after a major operation, was born in England in the year 1889. When he was 19 years of age he came to Australia. It was while he was occupied in business as a young man that he resolved to become a candidate for the ministry and worked conscientiously at his studies while still employed.
He became a Home Mission Student in the years 1913-1916 and qualified to enter the Theological Hall. After completing the Hall course he was posted as an exit student to Penola (South Australia) where he was ordained and inducted in February, 1920.
He thereafter served as minister of North Brunswick, Park Street Church - Brisbane, Traralgon, and Ormond where he ministered for 14 years.
In 1948 he was appointed Immigration Chaplain by the General Assembly and held this office until his death.
In 1939 he was appointed to the Immigration Committee of the General Assembly of Australia and in 1945 became the Convener of that Committee, and still held this office until the end. He served also as a member of the inter-Church Committee on Immigration, acting as Chaiman and also for a time as Secretary.
Mr. Chalinor’s contribution to Immigration in Australia is recognised far beyond Church circles, and members of Parliament have recognised the worth of his service.
He was a man of big stature and of big spirit. His love for the needy was foremost in his thinking, and many are those who have been helped, not only to come to Australia, but assisted after their arrival. The Assembly acknowledged his valuable service by electing him Moderator of the General Assembly in 1962, an office he filled worthily.
He leaves a widow, and a son, John, by a former marriage. Another son, Ormond, was killed during the second world war. The Assembly give thanks to God for his life of service and commend his widow and son to the God of all comfort and Grace.
