SHUGG, Edward Henry McLean, Rev, B.A. (1884-1966)
Assembly memorial minute 1966
Born Devenish East - 2nd May 1884. Died - 24th September 1966.
He entered upon his Arts course at the University of Melbourne in 1905, and graduated Bachelor of Arts in 1908. Thereafter he attended the Theological Hall at Osmond College, completing his Theological course in 1911.
He was appointed to Macarthur for a short period of ministry and was ordained and inducted to Rupanyup on 10th July 1912. He thereafter served at Tatura, being inducted on 30th April 1919, and Brunswick, being inducted on 11th May 1922. He was called by the Church to the Office of Director of Home Missions and took up his duties on 16th June 1934 and served the Church with distinction in this office which he held until his retirement from the active ministry on 31st December 1959.
Mr. Shugg was one in whom were blended the qualities of strength and compassion. He won his place into the affections of all those to whom he ministered as a man who was deeply concerned about people and whose integrity of purpose glorified the Master whom he served.
During his busy period as Director the Church honoured him by calling him to the Moderator’s Chair, and he graced this office, while at the same time he kept a firm hand on the important work of the Department of Home Missions.
His greatest contribution to the Church was in the field of Home Missions where his vision, ad ministrative ability and concern for people were blended to the making of an outstanding contribution to the Church’s extension policy and programme in new areas in both city and country.
The General Assembly gives thanks to God for his long life of devoted service to the Church and the Kingdom and commends Mrs. Shugg and the members of the family to the Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.
