HURSE, John Lewis, Rev (1881-1966)
Assembly memorial minute 1967
Born at Carisbrook, 23rd January, 1881. Died 26th December, 1966.
Ordained in Hobart in 1912.
Served in the Parishes of Queenstown, Tatura, Coleraine, St. John’s Ballarat, St. Andrew’s Launceston, Mortlake, Flemington, North Melbourne, Woodend.
He resigned from the active ministry in July 1954.
He served as a Chaplain to the Militia during the Second World War.
Lewis Hurse was a humble, gracious and devoted minister of the Church. He was an evangelist at heart and was ever seeking to share the "Riches of Christ" with others. Deeply concerned with the needs of men he was loved by all who knew him. Of a retiring nature, in the Courts of the Church he earned no special recognition, other than that he was always "found Faithful" and what greater distinction can be bestowed.
His preaching was warmly evangelical and appealing, and his pastoral ministry always helpful to his people.
The Church gives thanks to God for his long life of devoted service and commends his widow and three daughters and son (Reverend David Hurse) to the Grace of God, the assurances of Christ, and the fellowship and comfort of the Holy Spirit.
