GRAY, Elder, Rev, B.A. D.D., Dr (1848-1905)
Assembly memorial minute 1905
The Assembly records with deep regret the removal by death of the Rev. Elder Gray, D.D., Minister at Clunes, and Clerk of the Presbytery of Ballarat, at the early age of 57 years.
Dr. Gray was a native of the North of Ireland and was educated in the Queen’s College, Belfast, now the Royal University of Ireland, where he graduated B.A. After being licensed he was selected by the Colonial Committee of the Presbyterian Church of Ireland, ordained and sent out to Queensland, and from there was translated to the North Wimmera Charge in this State, and thereafter to Clunes where he has laboured faithfully and acceptably for 28 years.
Dr. Gray received the degree of D.D. from the Western University, Chicago. Dr. Gray was ever active and earnest in all local efforts for the spiritual and temporal benefit of the community. Dr. Gray’s death is a heavy loss to the General Assembly of which he was a most regular attendant, and to which he rendered invaluable services. It is impossible to overestimate the care he took in every matter committed to him, and the tact and geniality with which his various duties were discharged.
The Assembly deeply sympathises with the Congregation of which Dr. Gray was the beloved Minister, with the Presbytery of which he was for many years the efficient Clerk, and with his family and friends, but reverently bows to God’s will and accepts the dispensation of his wise but mysterious providence.
