MACDONALD, Murdoch, Rev, D.D., Prof (1833-1906)

 Person

Assembly memorial minute 1906

The Assembly desires to place oh. record its deep sense of the loss which the whole Church has sustained in the death of its fevered Father, Professor Murdoch Macdonald, D.D.

He was a man who took the deepest interest in every department of the Church’s work, and in all his manifold activities he ever kept before him the highest interests of the Kingdom of Christ. Whole-hearted earnestness and matured wisdom were characteristic of all that he did. His tactful, wise and Christ-like life has left its mark indellibly upon the history and development of the Presbyterian Church, not only in Victoria, but throughout the Commonwealth.

To his work in the training of students for the Ministry, he gave himself with whole-hearted zeal and ability. He was more than a Professor; he was the Father of every Student in his classes. Among the holy and inspiring memories of many ministers to-day are the wise and affectionate counsels which he gave them in their student days. Nor did his interest in his students cease with the Hall; into the remotest corners of the Commonwealth his interest followed them, and nothing gave him greater joy than to be allowed to share in their joys and sorrows. He was not only their teacher, but their life-long and warmly-affectionate friend.

But the Assembly feels that no words can at all express the affection and gratitude which it feels, and as long as the Presbyterian Church endures, the name of Professor Macdonald will be loved and revered. To his bereaved widow and family, the Assembly offers its sincere sympathy, and commends them to the God of all comfort.
