DICKIE, John Dalziel, Rev (1832-1909)
Assembly memorial minute 1910
In July, 1866, the Rev. J.D. Dickie, who had come from the United Presbyterian Church of Scotland, was settled in the wide district of Colac, and there he continued, greatly used and much beloved, until he ceased from the active duties of the ministry in 1898.
In Colac itself the handsome church erected in 1877, at a cost of £5000, and the fine Sunday School Hall, which cost £2000, are the outward signs of a long and faithful ministry. But his true memorial is the lives and character of the people whom he trained, and who still have him in their hearts. The retiring allowance of £100 a year which they willingly paid proved that, though absent, he was not forgotten. His fine character, sound judgment, and strong faith united to studious habits, and wide reading made his ministry unusually effective for the space of thirty-two years. He never lost interest in our Church and its work, and was guide and friend to not a few younger Ministers.
As his life had been joyful service, so his death was perfect peace. With calm resignation he laid down all earthly weakness to enter into heavenly vigour. Our Church mourns his removal, and sympathises with his bereaved widow and family.
