In 1920 he resumed his studies for the ministry and entered the Theological Hall. He was ordained and inducted on the 5th.September 1923 to the charge of Nyah and subsequently served in the parishes of Cavendish, Terang and Coburg. In June 1945 he was appointed Commissioner for Extension and Development. Here he made an outstanding contribution to the Church, the effect of which is still felt today. He held this office until his retirement in 1953.

In his retirement he was still active both in parish and community affairs and the congregation of Beaumaris owes him a great debt for the solid foundations he laid there, upon which it has subsequently built.

The Rev. J.P. Hamilton served the Assembly as convener of the Budget and Business committees and as a Presbytery Clerk he was noted for his efficiency and wise counsel. Both as a parish minister and as a church Administrator Mr. Hamilton was one who thought only to serve and in his service he greatly enriched the life of the Church.
