PORTER, Archibald Jamieson, Rev (1882-1973)
Assembly memorial minute 1973
Born on the 21st February 1882 at Belfast Ireland. Died 17th July 1973.
The Reverend Archibald Jamieson Porter came to Australia where he entered the Home Mission of the Church in the year 1907. After his theological training at Ormond College he was Ordained to the Office of the Holy Ministry on the 8th April 1914 and inducted to the Charge of Trentham. He served also in the parishes of Birchip, for 8 years and Black Rock for 17 years.
He was a faithful parish minister, concerned about his people. He served for many years as the Clerk of the Presbytery of Melbourne South. In 1942 he was appointed by the Assembly as Organiser for the Budget and made a real contribution to the building up of the Assembly enterprises.
Mr. Porter was a minister with a strong social conscience and was in the forefront of those who urged the Assembly to become involved in social action.
He was a humble, friendly man who, despite his strong convictions, never tried to dominate. Upon his retirement in 1943 he supplied for the Preachers’ Branch up until his death, being willing to go anywhere when called upon.
The Assembly gives thanks to God for the long faithful ministry of Archibald Jamieson Porter.
