HARDIE, Andrew, Rev (1842-1911)
Assembly memorial minute 1911
“ The Commission of Assembly places on record its deep sense of the loss sustained by the whole Church through the death of their esteemed Father, the Rev. Andrew Hardie, minister emeritus.
Mr. Hardie came to Victoria in 1873, fresh from the Theological Hall of the Free Church of Scotland, and began his work at Kilmore. In 1878 he was called to his life’s work at Richmond, where for thirty years he exercised his ministry with much acceptance and a large measure of success.
Mr. Hardie was not only earnest, faithful, and capable as Pastor of his congregation, but was ever active and useful in every local effort for the moral and spiritual welfare of the community in which he laboured. All through his years of ministry he was conspicuous for his faithful attendance upon the Courts of our Church, and its Committees, and for his usefulness therein. He was for years Convener of the General Assembly’s Foreign Mission Committee, and in that position rendered valuable services. As a natural result of such long and valuable services in this and other departments, and as a mark of esteem, he was called to the chair of the Assembly.
In 1908, on account of failing health, he resigned the charge of the Richmond congregation, and retired from the active duties of the pastorate. His “ eventide ” was brief, bodily infirmities increased, and gradually and peacefully he passed to his rest and his reward, his faith and hope in his Lord and Saviour undimmed.
Mr. Hardie was a man greatly beloved by his people, by his brethren in the ministry, and by all who were favoured with his friendship. His fine Christian character, his untiring devotion to His Master’s service; his special interest in Missions, Revivals, Temperance Work, and the Welfare of the Young, added to his genial and kindly disposition, secured him the love and esteem of the whole Church. Thoroughly evangelical in his preaching, and always alive to the distinctive aims and purposes of the Christian ministry, he showed himself a workman that needed not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
The sympathy of the Commission of Assembly goes out to the widow and family in their bereavement, and it prays that God may comfort and uphold them in their time of sorrow.”
