SCOTT, John, Rev. (1858-1926)
Assembly memorial minute 1926
Rev.John Scott was born at Glasgow about seventy years ago. He received his theological training in the United Presbyterian Hall, and was ordained and inducted into the charge of Greenloaming, Perthshire, Scotland, where he remained for fifteen years before coining to Australia.
His first settlement in Australia was at Grenfell, N.S.W., where he remained for eighteen months. He then succeeded the Rev. Alexander Hardie as minister of Hagley and Longford, Tasmania. Here he fulfilled eight years of faithful ministry.
In 1913 he accepted work under the Home Mission Committee, and did fine organising work at Glenorchy—New Town.
He came to Victoria in 1917, and was called to the charge of Meredith. During his ministry there a very fine new Church was built, principally through the personal effort of Mr.Scott. He was translated to Buninyong in 1923, and resigned that charge because of illness at the end of 1925, and had his name placed upon the Supply List. While on his way from Ballarat to supply the Beechworth pulpit for Sunday, 14th February, he became very ill when arriving in Melbourne on the Saturday, and was taken to the Melbourne Hospital. He wished to return to his home by the afternoon train, but passed into rest on the journey between Melbourne and Ballarat.
Mr. Scott was a man of quiet and reserved disposition, but his character was stamped with truth; not merely truth in speech, but in deed and life. He was incapable of anything mean or pettish. Those who knew him best loved him most. He never shirked his work, and was faithful to his people, and to the Church he loved.
The Assembly records its gratitude to God for the faithful life and services of the Rev. John Scott, and extends its prayerful sympathy to the widow and family.
