MEARNS, Robert Burns, Rev. (1856-1927)
Assembly memorial minute 1927
The Rev. R.B. Mearns died suddenly in the train at Mortlake on the morning of 2nd May. He was born in Scotland in 1856, and studied at St. Andrew’s University.
He was ordained and inducted to the charge of the Congregation at Allansford in 1897, and demitted it in. 1900. He was inducted to Dookie in 1906, and demitted it in 1909. He also served the Church at West Tamar, Tasmania, Rainbow was the last place at which he was stationed, and there he and his noble wife did great service in a time of stress. Mr. Mearns gave years of service in other Home Mission Congregations. Mrs. Mearns died some years ago, and he recently married again.
In early years Mr. Mearns was distinguished as an athlete. He was of a retiring nature, but very warm-hearted and responsive to any kindness. His preaching was marked by deep thoughtfulness, and those who were admitted to his friendship found in him a man worth knowing and an attached friend.
The Assembly expresses its sympathy with his widow in her sudden and grievous loss.
