HAY, George, Rev., M.A. (1843-1928)
Assembly memorial minute 1928
The Rev. George Hay, M.A., was born at Prestonpans in 1843 and graduated at Edinburgh University, taking his M.A. degree in 1871. The Revs. Prof. Skene, P.J. Murdoch and Dr. Marshall were fellow-students, as was also “Ian Maclaren. ’’
In 1874 Mr. Hay was ordained and inducted to the Parish of Humble, but after a few years’ service his health broke down, and acting on medical advice he came to Australia in 1880.
At the end of that year he was called to Rokewood, and remained there until 1914. when he resigned from the active ministry of the Church. To win and keep the affection and friendship of his people for 34 years is a record which very few ministers can claim in these days of short pastorates, and is an eloquent testimony to the faithfulness of his service and the uprightness of his character and conduct. Goldsmith’s words are a fitting description: "Remote from towns, he ran his godly race, and ne'er had changed nor wished to change his place."
After resigning the Rokewood charge Mr. Hay came to live in Sandringham and was elected a member of the Session, and while his health permitted carried out the duties of that office.
We tender to the members of his family the sympathy of the Church he loved and served so well.
