RIDDLE, Thomas John, Rev., B.A. (1843-1931)
Assembly memorial minute 1931
Mr. Riddle was born near Belfast, Ireland, in 1843. He received his training for the ministry in Queen’s University and in the Assembly’s College, Belfast. After a pastorate in several parishes in Ireland, he came to Australia, and became minister of Townsville, Queensland, in 1884.
In 1889 he was transferred to Koroit, Victoria, where he remained for 23 years. Although Koroit was his last parish, he continued to serve the Church in many ways, acting as locum tenens both in Victoria and in West Australia.
In 1920, he made his home in Ballarat, where for a time he did duty as chaplain of Wendouree Asylum and of the Ballarat cemeteries. In Ballarat, he associated himself with St. Andrew’s Kirk, of which he was an elder. He died on April 28th last in his 89th year.
Mr. Riddle was a preacher, evangelical and earnest, and he was ever seeking to win souls for the Master. He had a strong sense of duty, with a particular care for the poor, the lonely, and those living remote from a place of worship. He was held in high esteem, not only by his own people, but also by all others, for his faithful ministry and exemplary life. Every parishioner felt he had in Mr. Riddle a wise and true friend.
We deeply sympathise with his family—his daughter and his sons— one of whom is a well-known member of our Church—the Rev. T. J. Riddle, of Batesford.
