BOWIE, Frederick Gatherer, Rev., M.A. (1933)

 Person

Assembly memorial minute 1934

The New Hebrides Mission has sustained an irreparable loss in the passing of Mr. Bowie. In the story of our Missions he will be given a place amongst the noblest and the best.

He was a native of Shetland, Scotland, and a graduate of Aberdeen University. He received his theological training at the Free Church College of that city. These were the days when the Presbyterian world rang with the name and work of John G. Paton and under this spell Mr. Bowie offered himself for service in the Islands. He went to the New Hebrides in 1896 and altogether spent 37 years there.

His sphere at the beginning was on Tangoa. When Dr. Annand retired 20 years ago from the Principalship of the Native Teachers’ Training Institute, Mr. Bowie was chosen as his successor. In this department he laboured until his sudden death on December 7 last.

From the very beginning he showed that he had every qualification for the missionary calling. He loved the people among whom he lived and no sacrifice was too great for him to make to win them for the Master and train them for His service. He was ever their champion against men who sought to trample on them. With his fellow-missionaries his name ever stood high, for he was a genial soul, sympathetic and kindly and wise.

To his relations and his wide circle of friends our deep sympathy is given.
