CALDWELL, John, Rev. (1865-1933)

 Person

Assembly memorial minute 1934

Mr. Caldwell was a native of Glasgow, where he was born 68 years ago. He began his preparation for the ministry at Glasgow University. Coming to Australia in 1890 he completed his studies at Ormond.

His first charge was Chiltern, where he had a brief but impressive ministry. Taking up the work at North Williamstown, he continued there for 23 years, becoming widely known and greatly esteemed. His influence was felt by all sections of the congregation but by none more than the young men in whose service he conducted a Bible Class, famous not only for its numbers but also for its spiritual power and far-reaching inspiration. Appointed to Deepdene, which was then a Home Mission station, in a short time he was inducted as its first minister. Altogether he spent seven years in this sphere. On his retiral from the active ministry, he made his home in Balwyn. He was a gracious influence in the church there.

Mr. Caldwell was a preacher whose message brought life and comfort to his people. But impressive as was his work in the pulpit, no less outstanding was he as a pastor. In a remarkable degree he won the confidence of his people so that he was a father to them in their every time of need, while his humour and his singular gift of wisdom enabled him to solve their difficulties and give them the guidance and comfort they sought. Not by his own people only but amongst all sections of the community he was respected and honoured. With his brethren in the ministry he was a great favourite.

He accomplished a memorable ministry, the value of which can be judged only when we remember that he was a constant sufferer. He was one of God’s heroes, for not only was he uncomplaining but he ever met his troubles with a smile. We remember him with veneration and love.

Our heartfelt sympathy is given to his sons.
