DAVIES, John George , Rev., M.A. (1858-1934)

 Person

Assembly memorial minute 1935

Mr. Davies was born near Auckland, New Zealand, in 1858. He came over to Melbourne with his parents when a boy. He studied at Ormond College. His charges were Allansford, Buninyong (where he laboured first as Assistant to Rev. Thomas Hastie, and afterwards as his successor), St. George’s, Geelong, Korumburra, and St. John’s, Elsternwick. He served his Victorian Ministry, he spent three years in Korea, to the inspiration of the missionaries and the advancement of the work in that region. He died on 18th December, aged 76.

Mr. Davies was a singularly devoted man. He was at once a diligent pastor and a distinctly able preacher. He visited as few other men have, but he prepared for his preaching as if he had no other task. He was a friendly, happy, witty man, whose visits were welcomed by his people. But in the intimacy of his life with them, sharing' in their joys equally as he spared in their struggles and their sorrows, he was never less than their minister.

With his two daughters given to Korea, and his brother having laid down his life on the altar of service for the Korean people, he was a Foreign Missions enthusiast. Likewise, he was conspicuous as a Home Mission pioneer. In days when there were no roads, much less motor cars, he gave his strength to the building up of the Church in South Gippsland. Perhaps his most useful work was done there, and it is a question whether this province or Korea lay nearest his heart.

His widow and daughters have our sincerest sympathy.
