HARDIE, Alexander, Rev. (1856-1935)

 Person

Assembly memorial minute 1935

Mr. Hardie was born at Stirling, Scotland, in 1856. He studied at Glasgow University, and the United Presbyterian Hall, Edinburgh. He came to Australia in 1886. In 1887 he accepted a charge in New South Wales. In 1889 he became minister of Oatlands, Tasmania, four years later going to Hagley. Kilmore, Victoria, was his next parish, into which he entered in 1904, continuing there for some years. He was minister of Heidelberg for 18 years. He retired in 1925. He died on January 4, 1935.

Mr. Hardie did faithful and successful work in all his parishes. He was an acceptable preacher. In pastoral work he excelled, his ready and sympathetic manner gaining him a welcome entrance to the homes of his people. He was a frequent visitor to the Austin Hospital, where, during his pastorate, there was no Presbyterian Chaplain. The last service he rendered in visitation was at Camberwell, where he acted as pastor during the Moderatorship of the Rev. R. Wilson Macaulay.

He was always an eager promoter of Church extension. It was during his ministry at Heidelberg that congregations were established at Ivanhoe, Alphington, Montmorency and McLeod.

Nor did he cease to labour for the Church in later years. He laid the foundation of what afterwards became the parishes of Hartwell, South Hawthorn and Caulfield Central. He also served his Church well in the Council of the Churches, first as a delegate, and later as Chairman.

In the death of Mr. Hardie, our Church has lost one of its best-known and most-devoted ministers. The church extends its sympathy to his widow and daughter.
