BYRON, Stewart, Rev. (1849-1916)

 Person

Assembly memorial minute 1916

By the death of the Rev. Stewart Byron the Church has lost a minister of long and varied experience. He was born in Wigtonshire, Scotland, but was ordained by the Presbytery of Rockhampton, Queensland.

His early charges were at Emerald and Springsure in Queensland, where he did much difficult pioneering work. After spending some years in special evangelistic work, he held charges at Bulimba, Gladstone and Mount Morgan.

Coming to Victoria, he filled pastorates at Framlingham and Heidelberg, and then went to Devonport, Tasmania, for a time. He was afterwards called to Fairfield, but in 1913 was appointed Hospital Chaplain, and soon afterwards Metropolitan Prison Chaplain. Since the war he also acted as Chaplain visiting the Base Hospital.

His ripe experience, sanguine temperament, happy disposition and musical gifts, specially suited him for this work, and many testimonies have been given to the value of his ministrations.

A sudden illness seized him in September, 1915, and an operation endured with Christian fortitude gave him only temporary relief. He died on 14th April, 1916.

To his family the Assembly expresses its high appreciation of his character and services to the Church and its sympathy in their bereavement.
