TAYLOR, John Archibald, Rev. (1848-1915)

 Person

Assembly memorial minute 1916

The Rev. John Archibald Taylor was trained in our own Theological Hall, and was licensed in 1879. When he entered the Hall his intention was to become a Missionary in the New Hebrides, but there were reasons why this purpose was not fulfilled.

He was called to Dimboola, which charge he resigned after a pastorate of some years. Thereafter he served the Church in several Home Mission Stations. There were features in his character deserving special mention. His knowledge of the Bible, of Church history, and of Hebrew, was above the ordinary. He had all the elements of a true book-lover, and was exceptionally well read in several branches of literature.

He had a rich supply of humour, which made his company very desirable. He could write the most elegant and forcible English. His presentation of the gospel was adequate and luminous. Few men have been so single-minded in their service. The only consideration he had was the work assigned to him. His piety was simple and childlike, and his sincerity appealed to all who knew him.

Our Church extends her sympathy to his sorrowing sister and brother, and commends them to the compassionate care of our Heavenly Father.
