Assembly memorial minute 1915
The Assembly places on record the death of the Rev. Samuel Gilfillan McLaren, M.A., ex-Principal of the Presbyterian Ladies’ College.
Born in Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland, 74 years ago, he was educated at the University, where he had a distinguished career. Subsequently he entered the Theological Hall of the U.P. Church, and pursued his studies with a view to the ministry. On receiving license, he offered himself for Mission work in Japan, and was accepted and ordained, and for eight years he laboured there with assiduity and success. While prosecuting his Missionary labours, he was appointed Professor of Sacred History in the Union Seminary of Tokio.
On leaving Japan, for health reasons, he returned to Scotland, and, after a time came out to Australia, where he became Minister at Coburg. Two years after he was called and appointed by the General Assembly Principal of the Ladies’ College. Here he laboured for a period of 25 years, with credit to himself and to the satisfaction of the whole Church. The esteem of his pupils and of the Council of the College was shown by the valuable gift bestowed on him on his retirement.
In the business of the Church Courts Mr. McLaren took a deep and intelligent interest, while as a Minister of the Word, his scholarly attainments and deep religious convictions made his preaching a blessing far and wide.
The Assembly expresses its deepest sympathy with the sorrowing widow and family, and its prayers that God may comfort and support them in their hour of sorrow.
