WHITESIDE, William Sherlock, Rev., B.A. (1862-1916)
Assembly memorial minute 1917
William Sherlock Whiteside was born in County Antrim, Ireland, in 1862, and was ordained in 1886, at Derry Valley, Monaghan. After seven years of work, he went to California for his health’s sake, returning to Ireland in 1902.
After a few months spent in South Africa, he came to Australia, and was inducted at Leongatha in 1904. But the trying nature of the work in that district was too much for his strength, anti he resigned in 1909.
Recovering somewhat after a year of rest, he took charge of the station of Berwick, and raised it by his devotion and earnestness to be a fully sanctioned charge. Sickness, however, again overtook him, and after some time of illness he passed away on December 6, 1916.
His conspicuous virtues were those of humility and sincerity, but at the same time he declared fearlessly the great verities of the Christian faith.
The Assembly expresses its sympathy with the widow, with her soldier son, and with her daughter.
