LEWERS, Robert, Rev. (1827-1917)

 Person

Assembly memorial minute 1918

The Rev. Robert Lewers came to Victoria in 1872, and was inducted to the charge of St. John’s, Bendigo, where he exercised his ministry for a period of five years. He then accepted a call to the congregation of Eaglehawk, and remained its pastor for twenty-two years, retiring from the active work of the ministry in 1898 and residing in an increasingly quiet and retired fashion until his death.

He was a man of great and varied gifts, and a fine speaker, of marked freshness and unconventionality and intense vigour. Until increasing infirmity made it impossible, he attended the court of Presbytery with unfailing regularity. During the last few years of his life he gradually withdrew from public affairs; but his personality left a distinct impression on those who knew him best.

He died on 15th November, 1917, at the great age of 90 years.

The Assembly conveys its heartfelt sympathy to his widow.
