JAMES, John Morris, Rev., B.D. (1861-1918)
Assembly memorial minute 1919
The Rev. John Morris James, B.D., was born at Talybont, South Wales, in 1861. He was trained for the ministry of the Congregational Church at the Brecon Congregational College, Wales, and subsequently gained the degree of Bachelor of Divinity at the Yale University, U.S.A. In 1887 Mr.James came to Australia, where he laboured as a minister of the Congregational Church, first in Brisbane and subsequently in Geelong, for a considerable period. He was afterwards led to enter the ministry of the Presbyterian Church, and was duly received by our General Assembly.
As a minister of this Church, Mr. James ministered first to the Home Mission Charge of Charlton. In 1902 he was called to the charge of Lilydale, where he remained for ten years. In 1912 he was settled in the newly-formed Home Mission Charge of Ivanhoe, which prospered and became a self-sustaining charge under his care, and in which he laboured faithfully until his death on the 25th November, 1918.
Modest arid unassuming in demeanour, diligent in study, gifted in exposition, faithful in pastoral work, and consistent in character and life, Mr. James exerted a powerful influence, and was greatly beloved.
The Assembly expresses its deep symyathy with Mrs. James and her son and daughter, and prayers that God, the Father of the fatherless and the Judge of the widow, may comfort them in their bereavement.
