WEBSTER, William, Rev. (1848-1919)

 Person

Assembly memorial minute 1919

The Rev. William Webster, who died on 13th May 1919, was born in Leicestershire, England, in the year 1848. He came to Australia when a lad of 13 years of age, and was educated at the Geelong College. Subsequently he studied for the ministry, and for a time supplied the pulpit at Yarraville, then a Home Mission Charge.

His first ministerial charge was Wilcannia, N.S.W., where for four years he did valuable pioneering work. His subsequent charges were Inglewood (six years), Kerang (twelve years) and Oakleigh (12 years), in all of which he did faithful work and won the esteem and affection of his congregations.

Six and a half years ago he retired from the active work of the ministry, but continued to act as the Church’s Chaplain at the Springvale Necropolis till a short time before his death. His end came after a painful illness of five months, which was borne with Christian fortitude and wonderful cheerfulness.

Mr. Webster was an acceptable preacher, a faithful pastor, very sympathetic where sickness, poverty and distress were concerned, painstaking and methodical in all his habits, a true friend and a devoted husband. He was esteemed by all classes and creeds, and very numerous were the tributes paid to his memory from friends and admirers in the different charges in which he had laboured.

His widow has been in ill-health for many years, and to her the sincere sympathy of the Assembly is tendered in her deep sorrow and grievous loss.
