WEIR, Joseph B., Rev. (1919)

 Person

Assembly memorial minute 1919

The Rev.Joseph B. Weir was born, educated, and received into the ministry of the Presbyterian Church in New Zealand. He volunteered in 1908 to fill the vacancy caused by the retirement of the Rev. R.M. Fraser, missionary of the Tasmanian Church to Epi, New Hebrides, and for over ten years he laboured in that far-off station, without the helps and assistance that others have in more favourable circumstances.

Although not in robust health, he worked on, nobly supported by his faithful wife, never sparing himself in what he understood to be his duty.

In his relationship to his native congregation, he showed himself a capable leader, an efficient teacher both in spiritual and practical things, and a man who lived his life in the inspiration of the Gospel that he had come to declare. The people of the island always felt that he was their champion whenever they were wronged, and we feel deeply for that little flock left without a shepherd.

The Assembly desires to express its deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolence with the sorrowing widow and her little children, and earnestly commends them to the loving care of the Heavenly Father.
