COUTIE, John Thomas Copeland, Rev. (1855-1920)
Assembly memorial minute 1920
The Rev. John Copeland Coutie died on the 22nd March 1920, after a brief illness from which a fatal result was not expected. He was born in Victoria, was a graduate of Melbourne University, studied at Ormond College, and began his ministry at Numurkah.
He then became Principal of the North-Eastern College at Benalla, and for the last 15 years was minister at Box Hill, during which period a new church was built.
Teaching was one of his chief interests, and he spent his strength gladly and to good purpose in giving religious instruction in State Schools, as lecturer in the Deaconess Institute, at Ormond College to Home Mission Students, and at the Normal College for the training of Sunday School Teachers.
As Secretary to the College Committee he did invaluable work, and brought to this, as to everything, the powers of a highly trained mind. His preaching and his pastoral work exhibited the utmost faithfulness. He had a deep sense of order in Church worship. Whatever he undertook to do he did. He was gentle, genial, and unobtrusive, and always ready to put the best construction on things. The loss to the Church in his death is great.
The Assembly extends its sympathy to his brothers and sisters, and especially to the sister who was his companion for so many years.
